Tooling Engineer


Duties

Work closely with Project Manager regarding all aspects of new mold builds and engineering changes through qualification and customer approval.   These activities are to be performed as documented in the Quality System Procedures and Work Instructions in a manor that supports Empire Precisions Plastic Quality Policy.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Develop new and existing tooling vendors and track vendor performance related to cost, quality, and on-time delivery.
  • Interface with the Design Engineering department to ensure designs are suitable for production.
  • Manage sample phase of new tool to maximize grooming efficiency.
  • Work with internal operations teams and external vendors and to understand their needs relative to current tooling and new projects.
  • Responsible for analyzing blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documents, for review during DFM Process.
  • Prepare delivery and cost estimates for tooling.
  • Coordinate with Application Engineer, purchase and build of new equipment required to support production. (Secondary OPS, EOAT, Automation)
  • Reviews and critiques submitted mold vendor design proposals and assures functional mold performance and adherence to established mold construction standards.
  • Maintains project budgets and timing schedules and reports to management as needed.
  • Coordinates tooling trials, directs inspection layouts and tool modifications as required to achieve molded production part qualification and manufacturing approval of new tools as assigned.
  • Conduct Post Sample meeting’s following day to review with Internal Team.
  • Continually identify and implement process improvements in tool design/construction to reduce project lead times and improve the quality and performance of injection molds handed over to production for ongoing manufacturing.

Required Skills:

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Basic Blueprint Reading. (GD&T)
  3. CAD Literate (UG or Solidworks)
  4. Plastic Ejection Molding 10 years Exp.
  5. Microsoft Literate (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, Power Point)


Reports To:
Engineering Manager
Work Environment: Engineering Office
Physical Requirements: Minimal lifting, normally less than 25 lbs.
Educational Requirement: High School diploma. Completion of skilled trades applicable to plastics industry, associate degree preferred or equivalent 10 years minimum.
